Driving when tired can lead to car accidents

| Jan 9, 2017 | Car Accidents |

In Connecticut and elsewhere, it seems that fewer people are actually getting as much sleep as they need anymore. Work, family and other life commitments keep so many extremely busy. As such, sleep time suffers. Unfortunately, a lack of sleep can greatly reduce one’s ability to fully function — especially when behind the wheel of a car. In fact, driving when tired has been shown to lead to car accidents.

According to the AAA Foundation, missing just one or two hours of sleep is enough to double one’s chances of being involved in a car crash. For those who miss two to three hours of sleep, their odds of being involved in auto accidents quadruples. For this reason, it is recommended that teen and adult drivers get seven or more hours of sleep per night.

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention claims that approximately 35 percent of drivers in the United States sleep less than the recommended amount. As one in five fatal collisions can be attributed to drowsy driving, clearly this is a big problem. One that affects numerous lives every year.

Connecticut residents who have been injured or lost loved ones in car accidents with drowsy drivers may be entitled to seek compensation for their losses. Personal injury, wrongful death and any other applicable claims may be filed and litigated with the assistance of an experienced attorney. If those drivers who are deemed responsible for such auto accidents are found to have been negligent in their actions, the court may award the victims or — in the event fatality — surviving family members monetary judgments.
