There are a few actions that may forestall serious animal bites

The vast majority of self-proclaimed dog trainers and behavior specialists claim that the old advice advising the general public in how to avoid an attack by a dog are still the most reliable methods. Unfortunately, there has been a disturbing upward trend in the numbers of victims who have suffered serious injuries from animal bites. There may be a few practical strategies that can provide some protection in the event a Connecticut resident finds him or herself facing a dangerous situation.

The majority of dog attacks occur when an owner is attempting to protect a pet from an aggressive dog. In the process of intervening, the owner becomes the focus of the attack. While one of the first reactions to being bitten is to try to pull away or hit a dog on the head, both of these attempts usually result in more severe injuries. Instead, a bite victim should push against the bite as this throws the animal off balance and encourages it to release its hold.

Instead of using a blunt object to strike an attacking dog, victims may use the object as a type of bite stick. This can be done with any sturdy object such as a baseball bat, rake handle or other object at hand. Furthermore, one dog behaviorist urges a victim or rescuer to discharge a fire extinguisher into the face of the aggressive animal. The pressurized foam acts as an effective, non-lethal deterrent in more than 70 percent of attacks.

Most attacks occur with no warning. It may help to shout out a command to sit or stay, as an animal may respond to a forceful command. Since 2015, an estimated 1,500 victims have suffered serious injuries due to animal bites. In Connecticut, pet owners are held strictly liable for any unprovoked attacks by their pets. Victims may seek recovery of their monetary damages through the filing of a personal injury lawsuit.
