Warmer weather brings increased risk of motorcycle accidents

| Jun 1, 2018 | Motorcycle Accidents |

As Connecticut residents seek to enjoy the warmer weather months, they take to the roads in greater numbers. Police in Greenwich recently reminded motorists to increase their vigilance in an effort to prevent motorcycle accidents. Though the town does not see many crashes, even one fatality is too many.

Reportedly, there are approximately 100,000 motorcycles currently registered with the Connecticut Department of Transportation. The police lieutenant in Greenwich said in a statement that though his town has not experienced many motorcycle crashes, there have been fatalities over the past several years. In many situations, these wrecks can be attributed to other motorists failing to notice these machines on the road.

Two examples that the officer mentioned involved fatal collisions with vehicles after a driver failed to yield the right of way. A crash in 2003 occurred when a motorist attempted to pull into a private drive and failed to see an approaching motorcycle. Another fatal incident was caused when a vehicle struck a biker, though the details surrounding that 2009 crash were not described.

According to recent figures, Connecticut reports an average of 50 fatal motorcycle accidents annually. That may increase as the numbers of motorcyclists continue to rise. When motorcycle riders are killed as a result of negligence on the part of another party, their surviving families often sustain heavy monetary losses in addition to the loss of their loved ones. These family members may choose to pursue recompense by pursuing a wrongful death lawsuit. An experienced attorney can provide assistance in preparing a comprehensive case and presenting it in civil court.
