It happens too many times -- a distracted driver allows his or her attention to be diverted from the primary task of safely operating a vehicle. These tragic and preventable crashes often leave the families of victims emotionally and financially devastated. Connecticut families who lose loved ones through these types of accidents may consider whether to seek recompense through the filing of a wrongful death civil suit.
Recently, a 19-year-old man presented himself to the Connecticut authorities in connection with a fatal accident that occurred last May. According to officials, the teen was driving his truck in the eastbound lane of Interstate 84 near the exit 11. A 64-year-old man had pulled his vehicle off the side of the road and had exited his car.
For reasons that have not yet been detailed, the teenager became distracted by something other than a cellular phone. His truck purportedly drifted out of its travel lane and struck the man. Emergency responders were unable to provide life-saving efforts to the victim, who died at the scene.
It is unclear whether the driver remained at the scene at the time of the crash or why Connecticut police have only just filed negligent homicide, distracted and negligent driving charges against the man. He is reportedly due to appear in court later this month. The surviving family members of the deceased victim are likely still be trying to adjust to life without their loved one while coping with any financial losses that may have accrued in the months since this tragic wreck. An experienced personal injury attorney can assist families in these circumstances by assessing their case, compiling information and deciding whether a successfully presented wrongful death claim can provide these families with compensation that can offset the losses they have sustained.
