Serious car accidents due to texting a growing problem

The advent of the automobile greatly increased a person's ability to travel greater distances faster. Later advances in technology have enhanced people's ability to remain in communication at all times. Unfortunately, the combination of these two inventions often leads to serious car accidents that injure and kill Connecticut residents every year.

According to one set of statistics, approximately 2.5 million people in the United States are involved in car accidents every year. Of that number, more than half of them are said to involve a distracted driver. The same statistics report that an estimated 37,000 people die in these wrecks, and more than 420,000 are injured by a driver who was negligent in some manner. It also appears that texting behind the wheel is more likely to result in a serious crash than intoxicated driving.

It is estimated that it only requires three seconds for an accident to occur and at least five seconds for a motorist to read a text while driving. A driver who is distracted by a cell phone is believed to be almost 24 percent more likely to be involved in an accident -- even when caused by another party simply because he or she was momentarily inattentive to one's surroundings while driving. In spite of admitting that they are aware of the dangers of texting and driving, an estimated 35 percent of teens admit to texting while driving.

Furthermore, when questioned in polls, approximately 55 percent of teens and 77 percent of adults claimed to be capable of texting while driving. These statistics seem to imply that drivers are dismissive of the dangers posed by cell phones while driving. Connecticut residents who have suffered serious injuries or lost loved ones due to serious car accidents will likely spend years recovering from the tragic consequences. In an effort to recover the financial damages, victims (or the surviving families of deceased victims) may be entitled to file civil lawsuits against the party or parties believed responsible for these monetary losses.
