Dog owners in Connecticut must be in control of their dogs at all times. In any cases in which animal bites cause injuries, the pet owners can be held strictly liable. Dog bites can cause severe damage — both physical and emotional — not to mention the financial consequences of such injuries.
A 9-year-old boy recently lost part of a finger while he was playing in a park in a neighboring state. It was reported that the kid was holding onto a chain-link fence by a basketball court. A man walked by with his dog, when — without reported provocation — the dog attacked and bit the child’s hand. The boy was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unsuccessful in re-attaching the portion of the boy’s finger that was bitten off.
Although the man and his dog walked off after the incident, he was later located by police, and he is reportedly cooperating with officials. The dog was taken into custody by animal control officers who will determine whether there is a possibility of the dog being rabid. Authorities mentioned the possibility that criminal charges may follow.
As demonstrated in this case, such injuries can cause permanent scarring. Reconstructive and/or plastic surgery was likely required, and such treatments come with significant costs. While victims of animal bites — or the parents of victims — work on recovering from the injuries, it may be beneficial to retain the services of an experienced personal injury attorney to take care of the legal issues. A Connecticut lawyer can do what is necessary to prove negligence on the part of the pet owner and work on getting the maximum compensation allowed by law.
