According to Wikipedia: Environmental law is a complex and interlocking body of treaties, conventions, statutes, regulations, and common law that operates to regulate the interaction of humanity and the natural environment, reducing the impacts of human activity. There are two major subjects:

• Pollution control and contamination
• Resource conservation and management

To put it into personal terms, the landlord or a previous owner may have contaminated your home with lead paint.  Or you may be accused of doing the contamination.  Mold may also be the problem.
